2020 sucked. I wouldn’t say 2021 is a lot better, but at least we have live Phish concerts, which allows me to create new phan art prints! Most of my prints for this tour were started in early 2020, still unaware of what would occur that year. In previous years I have often done a series of posters with a common theme (check them out here:2016, 2018, 2019). It is a fun project, but involves a lot of research and preparation, and a lot of stress! I had decided back in 2019 that my next series of prints wouldn’t have a theme. This gave me the freedom to create them using different styles and mediums. I had been taking some graduate courses and was also able to apply some new and forgotten knowledge to my work!
My original plan for 2021 was to create only two posters for the shows I was attending, Hershey and Atlantic City. I’m not sure what happened, but I now have created artwork for most of the summer tour! They range in styles and sizes. Check out the gallery to see them, and scroll down to learn more about each print and where to purchase.
All Prints and postcards are available in my shop and the PhanArt Show in AC!
Summer Tour Print
This was a print that I had started working on last year, inspired by a stickerart collaboration I had drawn years ago. I liked the image due to the net imagery, which reminds me of the song “Mercury”. I’m also a big fan of space-related things, especially wormholes and black holes. The pink “worm” is actually inspired by a diagram of what a wormhole might look like!
For the first three shows of the tour, I created some postcards based on linocuts I had done not too long ago. These images were created to be used as examples of different carving styles when teaching printmaking to my students. I played with the idea of doing more in the series for the whole tour early on but decided against it. Some back issues recently returned that would have made carving and hand printing impossible. I later decided to use the images to create mini-prints on postcards, which I have often done for my prints. I’ve often heard the phrase “I love it, but I don’t know where I’ll put it” way too many times. A postcard can go up on the fridge, or framed alone or in a set! These postcards are available on their own or as a set of the first 5 shows
Nashville
Nashville’s mini print uses one of my favorite things to draw, robots! For their show at Ascend Amphitheater, some ascending robots seemed appropriate. The original drawing was ink and watercolor. This postcard is available on its own or as a set of the first 5 shows!
Deer Creek
My Deer Creek (I refuse to address it by any other name) print has quickly become one of my favorites for the tour. It was created by accident while playing around in Illustrator after learning how to actually use it! Prior to this, I had no idea how to use Illustrator and everything I knew about Photoshop was the result of trial and error. The sign and the deer were watercolor paintings, and the rest was digitally created. This was just going to be a postcard design, but I got enough feedback telling me it should also be a print. Printed on 11×17 100lb uncoated smooth paper, they are signed and numbered and limited to an edition of 50.
Hershey holds a special place in my heart for many reasons. I grew up near there, I used to work at Hersheypark during the summers in college, and it was there where I first met my wife! For this print I drew inspiration from old framed advertisements that I’d see in employee areas at Hershey. Based on an ad for Hershey’s Syrup (turns out they used to be sold in cans!), the original was an ink and gouache painting which I then scanned and digitally arranged. Prints are 11×14, printed on 110lb smooth uncoated paper. They are signed and numbered, limited to an edition of 100. I will have them with me at Hershey, and can be found walking the lot selling them. Prints are also available in my shop
Atlantic City
My AC print is another that began in 2020, revisiting an old style that I haven done in a while. It’s inspired by the song Tube, and includes many images from the song in the asteroid debris, as well as random Phish related nonsense. This probably took my the longest to draw due to the stippling style of inking found in the asteroid. The original drawing was done with Micron pens and gouache paint. The print measures 13×19 and is printed on 120 lb smooth uncoated matte paper, printed by Fireball Printing in Philadelphia. Each print is signed and numbered and limited to an edition of 100. These are now available in my shop, as well as the Phanart show in AC.
