Phish Summer 2019: Mohegan Sun

“..but the net’s unbreakable
So don’t worry about falling”

The eleventh print in my Summer 2019 series. This print was created during the Mohegan Sun run, and finished shortly after. I was inspired by the song Mercury, and the Durer woodcut “Astronomer” (1500) seemed fittings. I turned the figure into the mythical figure Mercury, and behind him are the symbols for the Sun, Earth, Mercury, and Venus, as well as the Mohegan Tribe symbol (2nd symbol down).

Prints are 9×12 on 11×14 paper, and hand carved and printed. Black and white editions are printed on 140 lb watercolor paper, and the color variants are printed on 98 lb mixed media paper. Black and white are an edition of 30, and a violet variant of 7. Due to the nature of the process each print may slightly differ in background color. Phish Summer 2019: Fenway Park

“Thunder calls through waterfalls
Rising tides and ocean walls
I can hear you when you sigh..”

The tenth print in my Summer 2019 series. This print was created during the Fenway run, and finished shortly after. I had chosen image a while ago, not realizing how apropos it was. For Fenway, I was inspired by Dürer’s print of Saint Sebaldus (1514). Sebaldus is the patron saint against cold weather, and was a hermit who took residence near Vicenza, Italy (where I grew up!) He usually depicted holding the church he helped start in Nuremberg. It seemed fitting to have him holding Fenway Park, which many may consider a church in it own way. This was a challenging block for me, both for the amount of time I had (started 1st night of Fenway on Friday, finished carving the following Monday), as well as trying to carve a 3×4 Fenway Park.

“I must inquire, Wilson, can you still have fun?”

The ninth print in my Summer 2019 series. This is the print that almost didn’t make it with me at Saratoga Springs. I was actually carving it on lot in Camden, which was fun because it actually helped a lot of people understand the process. I finished carving it, and printed them the night before the shows. For SPAC, I opted for the horse racing theme (yeah, I know it’s been done before!) Albrecht Dürer had done a lot of prints with horses, but his wood cut “Saint George and the Dragon” (1504) caught my eye with its king in the background, which made me instantly think of Wilson.

Summer Tour 2019: Camden

The eighth print in my Summer 2019 series. I was very excited to work on this for my hometown show! In the hopes of some dark jams and evil Phish during the Camden run, I looked at some of Dürer’s prints for the Book of Revelations. I took a portion of his print “The Whore of Babylon” (1498) and reinterpreted it as Reba on a Multi-beast on the banks of the Delaware with the BB&T burning in the background. They actually ended up playing Reba, Tela, and Antelope during the run, but no Sloth.
