My design for the Merriweather shows. Merriweather holds a special place in my heart, I’ve actually seen the most shows there. It’s the place where I run into the most people I know, either from Philly, the Harrisburg area where I grew up, and even old friends from college! The art was inspired by these interactions with friends, some of who I haven’t seen in years, and some who are no longer with us. I chose to use robots, since they have been a theme in lots of my work in the past, including stickers I used to give out/put up at shows I attended. This was one of my toughest pieces since I had so much detail with the audience! The original painting was ink, watercolor, and gouache paint. Prints are 11×14, signed and numbered, and limited to an edition of 100. Tickets are based on PTBMs, and the barcode links to the setlist on Phish.net!
The sixth print in my Summer 2019 Series. For the Merriweather shows, I was inspired by another of Dürer’s prints that he created for Book of Fools, this one titled ” Impatience When Punished” (1494). The Lizard Fool makes another appearance (the first was in my Bonnaroo print), and I choose to replace the bagpipe with a vacuum, and included a guitar, a drill, and a Moog synthesizer in the foreground.
Prints are 9×12 on 11×14 paper, and printed with Supergraphic black ink by Bill Fick. Both editions are printed on 140 lb watercolor paper. Black and white are an edition of 30, and 2 watercolor variants of 9 each. Due to the nature of the process each print may slightly differ in background color. I will have the prints with me on lot this weekend at the shows, and remaining prints will be available in my shop on Monday.
I recently made this setlist as a commissioned piece of the 6/11/11. It was made as a wedding present for a couple that had met at this show. I added some things into the header, including their initials and their likeness in the crowd. I can do any Phish show setlist, the first one you went to, the best one you went to, or in this case, the one where you met that special someone! Contact me via etsy, twitter, instagram, or facebook if there’s an illustrated setlist you’d like to own. And yes, I have done the Big Cypress setlist, it’s a bit ridiculous.
Notes: Daniel Saw The Stone was played for the first time since August 3, 2003 (137 shows). Reba did not contain the whistling ending. Antelope included an On Your Way Down tease from Trey. Chalk Dust included a BOAF tease.
These shows were especially fun for me, on account of being in attendance. I forgot my sketchpad, and initially freaked out, but realized this would allow me to fully enjoy the show. I brought it with me for the second night, and I’m glad I did. I had initially told myself that I would draw all new pictures for the songs, growing a bit tired of drawing the same ones. This kept me challenged, especially drawing so many variations of Tweezer! Prints are for sale via etsy.
