Well, my run of Phish shows has sadly come to an end, but it was great while it lasted. The last week has been hectic, with Mann and SPAC, but I’m back and have lots to do! More setlists to draw, orders to ship, and posters to create!
Hometown show! I’m always feeling grateful that I’ve been able to see Phish 3 years in a row 20 minutes from my apartment. A good time was had, and with lots of friends (many crashing in my place) it’s always a good time!
Notes: The Birds was quoted at the end of Birds of a Feather. Sleep Again was last played August 8, 2010 (224 shows). This show featured the debut of Things People Do. YEM featured Trey on Marimba Lumina.
Notes: This show featured the debut of Waking Up Dead, Friends, and Tide Turns. Llama was performed in a slow funk style and ended with a Whole Lotta Love tease from Trey. The Birds was quoted in Weekapaug. DWD was unfinished.
Phish started up their summer tour last night at the Xcel Energy Center in St Paul, MN. If last night’s show was any indication, we can expect a lot of bustouts this tour (which means I get to draw a lot of new songs!)
Notes: This show featured several bustouts: Pigtail (last played December 28, 2010, or 195 shows), Daniel Saw the Stone (last played June 30, 2012, or 140 shows), Dear Prudence (last played October 31, 1994, or 796 shows), Round Room (last played January 1, 2011, or 192 shows), Uncle Pen (last played August 31, 2012, or 123 shows), and I Found A Reason (last played October 31, 1998, or 493 shows). Trey teased The Little Drummer Boy in Ghost. Page teased Magilla in Simple.
Setlist posters are available for sale in my shop, joseeen.etsy.com, and I’m now offering show posters as well! For this tour, you can get one for $10 ($5 off!) when purchasing a setlist.
Tour is back! My favorite time of year, because I have lots of free time to draw all day (benefits of being a teacher!) I now enter my 3rd year doing my setlist illustrations (74+ setlists, 374+ song illustrations), and I’m ready to make some more! At this point the process is more like a puzzle, since I’ve draw so many songs, although there will be new variations of songs I’ve drawn before (the ones they play regularly). The headers will include all new drawings, as well as variations of my show posters I did for the shows as well.
2015 was a great year for me artwise! My setlist art helped me get a few jobs designing some show posters ( Without A Net,Jazz is Phish, and Tom Hamilton’s American Babies), and Poster sales helped raise over $200 dollars for Mockingbird Foundation ($1 from each setlist poster is donated as way of saying thanks for letting me use their setlist notes). I’m excited to see what 2016 brings.
This year brings a new series of posters for Phish summer tour. I knew I wanted to still create the illustrated setlists, but I also wanted to do something completely new. Having made a couple gig posters I learned a lot quick (using photoshop/dealing with short deadlines), and I viewed this series as a way to explore using digital and traditional media, and just figure new things out. It was an ambitious project, 15 posters in all. They are a combination of digital and ink and watercolor. Originally it was just going to be the state fish, but searching yielded many entertaining images of fishermen with their catch, which I found even more entertaining when you omit their faces! I’ve done 10 so far before tour started, and will create the rest inbetween doing the setlist art and attending shows (Mann and SPAC!)
I’m selling my prints in a few locations; My etsy shop along with setlists and song illustrations, A new streamlined shop (www.phishart.com) that’ll offer the show posters only, as well as on lot at SPAC, and possibly Mann (technically no vending is allowed).
As mentioned earlier, I will continue to post the setlist illustrations shortly after each show, as well as an option to purchase. For this tour I’m also offering the show poster for a discounted price when you purchase the setlist via my etsy shop! I also post the work in progress setlist via twitter, and they usually end up in .net discussion threads, as well as r/phish.Follow me on twitter and check them out shortly after each set!
I’m excited to see what this tour brings us. Hope to see you guys on lot and the shows!
Here’s the next installment of my Phish summer tour posters for 2016. I’m more than half way to my goal of illustrating all 15 venues they’ll be playing at (including Lockn’). The fishing theme continues with each venue’s state fish. I’ve enjoyed getting back to working with micron pens, as well as working digitally (and learning new things along the way) to create these posters. I’ve taken people’s thoughts and opinions into consideration for these last couple, as well as some edits to the previous ones (“I still call it Deer Creek”) . I’m looking forward to drawing some west coast fish, and will be posting them soon.
In the meantime I’ve just opened up my new shop, www.phishart.com, where all the posters from this series will be available, although I will continue to have my setlist posters available in my etsy shop.
For this summer’s tour I decided to take on the ambitious project of creating a show poster for every venue this year. On top of doing an illustrated setlist for every show. So yeah…ambitious may be an understatement. As challenging as this may be, I’ve had a lot of fun drawing these. I wanted a common theme for all the posters, and risking the overused fish theme, opted to illustrate the state fish for each venue. The drawings are micron pen and watercolors, along with some digital imaging. Here are the first 5 I’ve done so far. I hope to complete the rest before tour starts, and release them for sale in my shop (also on lot at SPAC) around the time of each show.
Phish recently played their first ever shows in Mexico, on the beaches of Barcelo Maya Resort. I wasn’t able to make it, but at least was able to watch it live via stream. These show setlists are available for purchase as a 3 print set of the entire run.
Notes: This show was webcast via Live Phish. David Bowie contained a Theme fromGilligan’s Island tease from Mike. Trey teased Sneakin’ Sally in Possum. Jefferson Waful assisted Chris Kuroda on lights for the first time and would do so for the rest of the weekend’s shows.
Teases:
· Magilla tease in Simple
· Reba quote in Chalk Dust Torture
Notes: This show was webcast via Live Phish. Page teased Magilla during Simple. Reba did not contain the whistling ending, but Trey briefly quoted Reba’s whistling coda in Chalk Dust.
Notes: This show was webcast via Live Phish and featured the Phish debut of The Ocean. Moma Dance and DWD were unfinished. Trey teased The Rover at the start of DWD. DWD, Crosseyed, and Weekapaug contained Shipwreck quotes. Crosseyed also contained an I Don’t Live Today quote from Fish. Trey teased Your Pet Cat in Weekapaug.
I recently finished up a linocut poster for the Phish Riviera Maya shows in Mexico coming up this weekend. I had been on the fence whether or not I wanted to do something for this show, since I normally just do illustrated setlists for the shows. But the idea came organically, and with a 2 week Christmas break, I really had no reason not to. I have done lucha libre inspired artwork in the past, and wanted to avoid the Mayan/Aztec based theme, so this seemed very fitting.
Inspired by vintage lucha libre screenprinted posters, I knew this was be challenge to accomplish. My “studio” consists of whatever space I have in my apartment, which doesn’t allow enough space for screenprinting. The next logical option would be to recreate a poster via block print (linocut). Although I’m familiar with linocuts, I’ve never done one this size, which usually work best when using a press. Although they were hand pulled, I actually used a baren, which helped create a more consistent black.
My first couple pulls were actually 2 color blends, which was utilized by many lucha libre posters, but I wasn’t overall impressed with it. I made a small edition of these, and may play around with it more in the future.
I finally decided on a tri color background, which I saw on a few lucha posters, but are mainly with old concert posters. Without the ability to screenprint, I had to find a way to mimic that look. I did a few with a watercolor background, but it was a bit to light for me. acrylic took a lot of time, and gouache seemed like a likely winner, but then I remembered I have a ton of cans of spraypaint, and was able to get the color blending I wanted.
Printing table with homemade registration (computer table)
Spray room (spare bathroom
Drying area 1 (bedroom)
Drying area 2 (kitchen table)
The linocuts are available in my shop right now, limited to an edition of 30. I have quite a few variations available, and will make them for sale shortly.
The Variations
Although I haven’t posted them for sale, they are all available, so you can contact me via social media (twitter, instagram, facebook)
Notes: This show was webcast via Live Phish. BOAF contained a quote of The Birds. During I Didn’t Know, Trey introduced Fishman as “The Man Mulcahy.” The crowd sang the last verse of I Didn’t Know, and Fish then asked the crowd to join him in singing Happy Birthday to his daughter, Ella. The third set began with the band on a second stage beneath a funnel-shaped screen suspended from the ceiling. As the band jammed, part of the screen descended and became an hourglass shape surrounding the stage, on which a series of images were projected. As the jam continued and the countdown to midnight approached, the band returned to the main stage.
