Old habits die hard! Creating ticket stubs has taken up most of my time this year, forcing me to set aside the setlist art this year. Trey teased Super Bad in Weekapaug. The second setbreak music was comprised of songs referencing past Phish New Year’s Eve gags. Before the third set began, a barbershop quartet appeared with a singing telegram for Phish. The telegram said that at the stroke of midnight, it would be 40 years for Phish and to make a wish. Trey wished he had a time machine so they could do it all again. A cube descended from overhead and a time machine was revealed near Mike. The quartet activated the time machine and the cube played audio and video from past years of Phish. Dancers from various past new year’s gags appeared on stage as well as a wombat (from October 31, 2013). The wombat broke the time machine and Ghost began with dancers and characters (like Father Time from December 31, 1999, and the Famous Mockingbird from December 31, 1992) continuing to appear from the band’s past performances. Ghost featured Meatstick lyrics sung by the band as well as by dancers in different languages in a nod to December 31, 2010. The first Bohemian Rhapsody since December 31, 1996 (850 shows) featured the Late Show Gospel Choir singing on risers behind the band and Ghost quotes from Page and the choir with subsequent lyrics changed to reference Ghost. The first Jungle Boogie since December 31, 2003 (544 shows) featured the BD Entertainment Marching Band along with the choir. The marching band and choir were also featured in Wilson where a platform above Trey that had appeared for the entire New Year’s run descended and the clone that had been lying on the platform rose and was revealed to be a Tom Hanks actor from Castaway. Inflated Wilson volleyballs were then tossed into the crowd. During Auld Lang Syne, Phish briefly stopped playing and ate cake in front of the stage while the marching band and choir continued to perform. Carini featured several dancers in “naked dude” costumes emerging from a birthday cake in front of the stage and dancing and running around with security trying to catch them. The Theme from New York, New York was performed for the first time since December 31, 1997 (772 shows) and featured the naked dude dancers performing a kickline in front of the stage while adding vocals and Trey changing the lyrics to “if I could be naked there.” Piper contained Crosseyed quotes. During Tweezer Reprise, the wombat ran and danced across the stage. The post-show music was Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which was a nod to Phish playing their 72nd show at Madison Square Garden, tying Elton John.

Phish New Year’s Run 2022 Tickets and Prints

I’m excited to present my ticket stubs for the Phish New Year’s Run at MSG in New York City. This concludes my yearlong project of creating stubs for every Phish show in 2022! I was inspired by the food and fauna one may encounter late at night in NYC. The original illustrations were ink, watercolor, and gouache. They are available in my shop: www.joseeen.etsy.com. I will also be selling them at the PhanArt Show at Hill Country Barbeque on 12/30 from 1pm-6pm (click here for more info).

As with my previous stubs, they are inspired by PTBMs (Phish tickets by mail) down to the weight and feel of real ticket stubs. At this point, I have created over 40 unique ticket stubs for 2022! Tickets going digital has made many people realize how important ticket stubs can be, even if they end up in a shoebox under the bed. I’m here to fill that void in the meantime.

I’ve also created some 8.5×11 mini prints using the artwork I created for the stubs! The unusual size of the tickets means that 1-2/3s of the illustration gets cut off, which bummed me out. And due to each ticket being a standalone image (summer tour stubs created 1 full image when placed together), I opted to create a set of prints rather than 1 large poster.

Phish MSG 2021

I am ecstatic to share my print for the Phish New Year’s Run at Madison Square Garden in NYC! This print is 12×18, printed on 100lb glossy cover paper. Prints are signed and limited to an edition of 200. Inspired by the New Yorker magazine, I sought to capture the sights outside MSG during the new year’s runs, often firsthand! I also included over 30 song references throughout the print. This print was comprised of over a dozen small gouache paintings, which were then scanned and digitally arranged.

The print is directly inspired by the May 25th, 1940 cover of the New Yorker, painted by Joseph Low, who created many covers from 1940-1980. While I did not initially plan to do a New Yorker cover, it was Low’s style for this painting that spoke to me. It felt familiar, but I knew I hadn’t seen this image before. I saw the possibilities of creating song references in this style, and went for it!

My biggest challenge in creating the painting was the lack of outlines. I’m fond of using outlines in my work, so this required rethinking my process. I would sketch up an image, darken the lines, and place it on a light table. I then placed a watercolor paper on top of it and would paint an image without lines! As I became familiar with Low’s style, I began painting without sketching first, and my painting started to get smaller. It felt very natural, and while researching more of Joseph Low’s work, I suddenly knew why.

I first came across the October 22nd, 1942 cover some time in elementary school. It may have been an issue of Scholastic Arts magazine or a framed cover in the library, but it was an image ingrained in my brain. I remember trying to replicate the style with markers, but never quite got it. I eventually moved on to other things, but that cover really stuck with me. Who would’ve thought I would rediscover these covers years later!

So, the reaction to my print was mind-blowing! I posted a picture of it when I got my test prints and was bombarded about how to get one. I decided to do a preorder of 50 prints which sold out instantly! My general on sale sold out within hours, so at the moment it is not available in my shop. I will have the remaining prints in the edition available at the PhanArt show at the Stewart Hotel on 12/30 during the New Years Run. I will have a small amount of Artist and Test proofs in my shop in early January. I will also have a surprise print that will be only available at PhanArt!

Phish MSG NYE

My final block print of 2019, created for Phish’s NYE run. The 14th in my yearlong series inspired by the work of Albrecht Dürer. This print was inspired by part of “The Tapestry of Michelfeld” (date ND) and includes several birds found in Phish songs, as well as Trey’s dog Marley. As I researched the image, I found it interesting that it was actually based off a tapestry made about a 100 years prior, this being a recreation of it. Prints are currently available in my shop.

It’s been quite a year working on all these block prints! I didn’t expect that it would take nearly all my free time, but it was a fun experience. For those asking, yes there will be a Dick’s Run linocut, hopefully before the end of the month. I had opted to not make one at the time, mainly since I was back at school teaching, and had too many other things on my plate.

As for what 2020 brings, I’m still not sure. A new year will bring a new theme and possible medium for my Phish prints, although I see myself going back to printmaking for some song illustrations or Grateful Dead inspired work.

Chalk Dust Torture Reprise was played with Ass Handed lyrics and contained Guy Forget quotes. In Character Zero, Fish changed the “waste the day” lyric to “Guy Forget.”

Axilla featured the Axilla II ending and was followed by banter from all four band members continuing the pan story from the previous night’s show and ending with a mention of pan flute extraordinaire Zamfir. Richard Glasgow (a.k.a. Dickie Scotland) then came onstage appearing as Zamfir, holding both a pan flute and a pan. The third set opened with the Phish debut of Send in the Clowns, sung a cappella and with lyrics changed to Send in the Clones. For First Tube through Tweezer Reprise, each band member performed on separate moving platforms hoisted above the stage as dancers dressed as their clones performed onstage and provided additional vocals throughout the set and encore. Trey’s platform became stuck for the majority of the set and he had to be rescued after Tweezer Reprise. Given that the band (Trey) could not leave the stage after You Enjoy Myself, there was no encore break and Tweezer Reprise was announced as the start of the encore. Rescue Squad was performed Trey solo (singing and playing Fish’s drum set) while he was waiting to return to the stage.

What a run! I was lucky enough to attend 12/28, a last minute decision (like every MSG show I’ve attended), courtesy of my wife! Although we were in section 304, the view and sound were amazing!
