Phish Pittsburgh poster

I’m happy to present my  poster for Phish’s show in Pittsburgh at the Petersen Events Center during their 2017 Summer tour. 12×18 on thick glossy paper (#110 cover). This poster combines the venue with the iconic Duquesne Incline cable car which overlooks the Pittsburgh skyline. Original is ink and watercolor, and includes references to several songs, as well as several Pittsburgh sports teams. Limited to a signed and numbered edition of 100.

Pittsburgh Final web

I included a lot of little references in the poster to Phish songs, as well as a few sports teams (see if you can spot them!) The posters are available in my Etsy Shop , as well as www.phishart.com.  I plan to bring a few to Pittsburgh with me, but the likelihood of a lot scene or shakedown is slim, since the venue is in the middle of the city. I will also have these at the Phan Art shows during the MSG run in the Hotel Pennsylvania (7/22 and 8/5, 12-6pm)

Madison Square Garden
New York , NY
This show was webcast via LivePhish. This show featured the floor and stage covered with artificial turf (numerous plants also dotted the stage). Prior to the show, actors played garden sports including croquet, badminton, and mini-golf, while a few more “sunbathed” on a riser behind the stage. During the first setbreak, golfers came on stage and hit soft golf balls into the crowd.  Light contained an Auld Lang Syne tease.  You Enjoy Myself contained a Birds of a Feather tease.  Trey, Page and Mike came out for the third set in golf carts and began hitting golf balls into the crowd. Fish then arrived on a golf cart wearing donut pants and shirt, an argyle vest, and a golf hat.  Golf carts were brought back on stage during Kung, then began racing past the stage periodically during Chalk Dust. During the Chalk Dust jam, golfers began getting out of the carts, hitting balls into the crowd and dancing on stage.  One of the golfers did the New Year’s countdown from on top of a cart.  Auld Lang Syne was accompanied by balloons dropping from the ceiling and ping pong balls fired from cannons.  Tweezer Reprise featured Carrie Manolakos on vocals and a number of backup singers. The remainder of the third set and encore featured song titles focusing on a golf theme. Wilson was preceded by an animated Wilson golf ball on the venue’s jumbotrons. Iron Man was preceded by Page coming to the front of the stage to wish the crowd Happy New Year and reference the start of the 30th year of Phish. In an apparent reference to Bob Hope, Page wore a blazer, USS Nimitz ball cap and carried a golf club. Driver was stopped and restarted. This show featured the Phish debuts of Garden Party and Fly Like an Eagle, the first full Phish performance of Iron Man (which was last played December 31, 2003, or 192 shows), and the first ever a cappella Lawn Boy.

Still Waiting (for Fall Tour)

I recently had the time to do some much needed maintenance to my Shop, as well as to this site.  I’ve streamlined my shop, and at the same time added more items. Through the power of scroll-down menus, I was able to add setlists from previous years. I’ve also changed up this site, including updating the setlist archives.  It’s now easier to go to a specific show  or tour with endless scrolling.

I have previous year setlists on sale, including deals if you purchase multiple show runs!  I also have 2016 show posters available for all the summer tour shows.  Sadly, I doubt I’ll be able to do show posters for  all of Fall tour (it’s been a busy school year so far) but I might do a poster for all of tour, possibly a block print.   I’ll of course be creating setlists for fall, and with them new song illustrations.  I’m also opening up commissions for any show setlists for only $25!  You tell me the show, I create the setlist with header art, at a very limited edition of 10.  I can also do multiple shows for a discounted price.    You can contact me below if interested, or hit me up on various forms of internet (FB, IG,Twitter links on the side menu).  And as always, a dollar from every setlist sold is donated to Mockingbird Foundation as a thank you for allowing me to use their setlist notes for my setlist art!

What I did with my Summer Vacation

Back in May I had posted about my ambitious summer project, a poster for every show/run Phish played this summer.  I surprised myself when I first announced it, wondering if this was a good idea. I was still going to do the illustrated setlists, and those can take a lot of time on its own.  But here we are in August, and I can say it was a success! 13 posters, 11 different kinds of fish, and a few epic beards in 2 months.  It was fun working with detail again, it had been a couple years.  This was also my first time drawing fish, so I learned a lot doing that.  This project also allowed me to more acquainted with the digital medium.  Everything I learned has been self taught ( I avoided digital in college, and learned just enough to edit photographs), and I can say I can do a lot more now than 2 months ago.  I’ll be working on Lockn and Dick’s soon, taking a little break to work on some other things.  Stay tuned for more!

Summer tour
fun fact: this file is 5.55mb

This summer also marks my 3rd year making my illustrated setlists.  I was a bit worried, because I had told myself a while ago that I wouldn’t make them anymore if they started to feel like a chore.  At this point, I have the process streamlined, and can create them quickly (I might make a post about the process), but no longer feel that I have to create them right when the show is occurring.  Previous years found me showing up to streaming parties with a laptop, drawing pad, and a scanner!  By allowing myself to create them at my own pace, so I was able to continue this year without that feeling of “got to do the setlist..”  This also gave me the chance to redraw a lot of older songs, especially the ones played frequently, as well as several versions of new songs, which were also played a lot this tour.

summer setlists copy.jpg

The setlists by the numbers:

  • 20 setlists
  • 457 total songs
  • 205 different songs
  • 21 bustouts (had to draw a lot of these)
  • 9 new songs (most with 2-3 variations)
  • 41 new illustrations for songs commonly played

All posters are available in my etsy shop, and I’m offering both poster and setlist for only $25 (plus shipping) !

I also have just the show posters in a more streamlined shop: www.phishart.com

More stuff coming soon, and I’ll soon start taking commissions for specific show setlists.
